The Harpers are a Southern blue-collar family in Raytown, Missouri. Thelma "Mama" Harper (Vicki Lawrence), a gray-haired widow with sharp opinions and a sharper tongue, shares her house with her sister Fran (Rue McClanahan), a journalist for the local newspaper. But the peaceful house soon turns to chaos.
After his wife leaves him to become a Las Vegas showgirl, Thelma's son, Vinton (Ken Berry), moves in with his kids Buzz and Sonja, not long before he meets and marries Mama's flirty neighbor Naomi (Dorothy Lyman). Along with this full house of characters, Thelma's two daughters, Eunice (Carol Burnett) and Ellen (Betty White), also pay frequent visits.
Later seasons bring a new cast of characters with Iola Boylen (Beverly Archer), the prissy next door neighbor and Thelma's best friend, and Eunice's delinquent son, Bubba (Allan Kayser), who moves into the house after Buzz and Sonja head to college.
“Mama’s Family” debuted in 1983 as a spin-off of the popular skit "The Family” from “The Carol Burnett Show.”
